WHAT
IS A CERTIFIED LACTATION CONSULTANT?
By Debbie Albert, Ph.D., IBCLC
Lactation Consultants are trained professionals who provide
one-on-one breastfeeding assistance and education to nursing
mothers. They usually help with breastfeeding management
strategies and technique, as well as assisting with infant
suck and feeding behaviors.
It helps to have a working knowledge of the terms and
training levels of everyone you may come across when seeking
breastfeeding assistance. The terminology can be confusing
sometimes, but it's worth it to take the time to ask a few
questions, like : "Do you have a specific certification
in lactation?" and "How much training and experience
do you have?"
One of the most recognized credentials in lactation circles
is the IBCLC (International Board Certification in Lactation
Consulting). Prior to obtain- ing this certification, an
individual must have at least 2500 to 4000 hours of practice
as a breastfeeding consultant and 30 hours of breastfeeding
education. They must pass a rigorous exam, maintain continuing
ed hours after certification, and re-certify by exam every ten
years. More specific information about this credential and a
list of IBCLC certified individuals can be viewed at www.iblce.org.
